There are basically 4 ways to divorce:

  • Do-it-yourself (also called pro per or pro se)

  • Mediation

  • with limited help from a court-based mediator

  • with the unlimited help of a private mediator

  • attorney mediator

  • mental health professional mediator

  • other mediator

  • Collaborative Divorce

  • attorneys only (2 attorneys, 1 for each client)

  • team approach based on the needs of the clients:

  • Financial Specialist, as needed, usually 1 neutral

  • Family Relationship Specialist (Divorce Coach), as needed

  • Child Specialists, as needed

  • Traditional Divorce

  • can reach settlement outside of court with attorneys negotiating

  • litigation in court

  • other professionals referred to as needed,

  • Financial Specialists, as needed, can be several

  • Therapists

  • Mediators or arbitrators
